This Green Check Kotpad Tussar Pata Saree features a lustrous green Tussar silk body structured with a fine white check pattern and framed by contrasting white Kumbh borders. Its Jada (pallu) carries traditional Machha (fish) and Kachua/Kachim (tortoise) motifs, along with a central Jada Moh featuring the characteristic temple motif known as Chul. The fish and tortoise belong to Kotpad’s traditional natural-world vocabulary, reflecting the close relationship between the textile, its surrounding landscape and the everyday life of its weaving communities. The saree is woven using the characteristic extra-weft technique, in which supplementary yarn is manually inserted to form the motifs, while the Kumbh border is traditionally constructed using a three-shuttle technique. The shimmering green is achieved through natural dyeing practices using plant-based colourants; the documented Kotpad palette includes Indigofera tinctoria (indigo) and Curcuma longa (turmeric) among the natural dyes used to introduce new colour variations, alongside the traditional Aal dye tradition.

Technique: Kotpad sarees are distinctive handwoven textiles from Kotpad in Odisha, traditionally woven by the Mirgan community on pit looms and renowned for their rich, earthy character. Their identity lies in the use of Aal (Aul), a natural vegetable dye, traditionally extracted from the roots of the Indian mulberry tree, which produces the characteristic deep red, rust, brown and black tones of Kotpad textiles. The body may feature small butis or pictorial motifs inspired by the natural and cultural world around the weavers- fish (Machha), crab (Kankra), tortoise, peacock, butterfly (Peepli), pots, boats, axes and other elements of everyday and ritual life. What makes traditional Kotpad especially distinctive is its hand-developed extra-weft motifs, created manually with supplementary yarn rather than through Jacquard, dobby or other mechanical patterning. The borders are traditionally built using an interlocking technique, often creating bold solid or temple-inspired forms such as the Kumbh motif. The motifs may have subtle irregularities in placement, a natural consequence of being created by hand. Each Kotpad saree a visual vocabulary rooted in the landscapes, beliefs, occupations and everyday life of the communities that have woven it for generations.
